I have a 970 evo in the same sort of position as above and idle is around 30C. HWmonitor and CrystalDiskInfo report the same temp. Though to drop load temps I added a passive cooler, a Gelid subzero (why not at £9). Also added a side fan in my case blowing in the general direction of the M2 drive. A Crucial MX500 or a Samsung 850/860 Evo is just as good and fast as a 960/970 when it comes to OS and gaming I have a distinct feeling you are correct on this. I did go ahead and start a different thread for that discussion though cuz I don't want to hijack and convolute my original topic.

The 970 evo OPERATING TEMPERATURE 0 - 70 ℃ according to Samsung. And there's not a realistic expectation for user to have to monitor or manage (NVMe) SSD temps, so if you choose to do that you're just crazy-making in most cases.

At idle, the 970 EVO's temperature hovered around 33 ºC. When pushed hard, these temps climbed up to 79 ºC before DTG was triggered, reducing performance. It took a lot to do this though.
